The proposed analysis aims to underline that the promulgation of a constitution is only the beginning of a long institutional and political process, whose most important and critical stage is the implementation of the principles sanctioned by the constituents. To achieve this goal, is presented a historical overview of the Italian constitutional development and outline some of the main characteristics of the text prepared by the Constituent Assembly from 1946 to 1948, to investigate into the difficulties and criticisms that the leadership of that time had to face when implementing the republican Constitution.
