Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand the discursive representations about marriage equality and LGBTIQ+ people in the Facebook comments of 11 items of news published by Chilean media during 2019, 2020 and 2021. This research is inscribed in an interpretive paradigm and has a descriptive and exploratory scope, using Grounded Theory (Strauss y Corbin, 2002) and a qualitative approach. We postulate that people manifest attitudes through discursive strategies that are a fundamental component of social representation (Moscovici, 1979). Following Wodak (2003), we analyzed nomination and predication strategies to discursively configure LGBTIQ+ people and we identified the topoi that support the rejection of marriage equality. Two main, related categories were identified through axial coding: Marriage is Between a Man and a Woman and LGBTIQ+ People are Immoral.
