Resumen
Objective: The purpose of the following paper is to raise awareness about the real dimensions of the space debris problem and the need to strengthen the current law, in benefit of the protection of satellite networks and modern society. Methods: the methodology was based on the application of the key elements from the securitization theory, regarding the space debris dilemma, stating it as an existential threat to the satellite networks. Results: Through the application of the securitization theory, it was possible to identify the securitizing actor; the audience; the speech act; the functional actors; to conclude with extraordinary measures, to allow the authorities to invigorate the space law and to mitigate the projections of the phenomenon. Conclusions: given the lack of a determined and specific action from the decision makers, the satellite networks might collapse because of the increasing risks resulting from the space junk, considering its existence threatened as fundamental elements of the critical infrastructure of modern society.
