Resumen

This paper describes new socio-cultural scenarios, in which women and men in the north of Chile negotiate about their gender relations. Methodologically, the research adopted a scale of regional analysis that allowed to account for the migratory movements that configure forms of organization of extended Aymara families by way of territorial dislocation. This form of cultural adaptation allows the Aymara to update their patterns of cultural reproduction, making possible their incorporation into the national economy, which tends towards social and community fragmentation. In particular, the article describes appropriations that Aymara women make of new social and cultural practices, in geo-referenced contexts: The highlands, valleys and coastal cities. In terms of results, the main socio-economic transformations at the regional level are described in order to be able to understand some of the challenges faced by contemporary Aymara families. These challenges are described in terms of: A) family economy and work, b) appropriation of the territory and, c) new gender scenarios and tensions, based on emerging female leaderships and problematic needs in the reproductive and productive areas.
