Resumen

The following article is the result of an experience developed over four years where 22 children from the Commune of Lo Prado were chosen by their peers and met with the school councils of each school, on special occasions they spoke with councilors and the mayor of the commune regarding matters that involved the rest of the territory The traditional role of the school as a reproducer of social inequalities is questioned, emphasizing the importance of student participation in the educational and community process. The objectives seek to discuss the existence of democratic spaces in school and their impact on the learning and personal development of students. The paradigm corresponds to action research, through a case study. The methodological process used is based on a qualitative approach that values the description of processes, especially pedagogical practices, and their understanding through the teachers' narration of their professional experiences. This narration was produced through interviews, conversations and collection instruments. The experience allowed students to be actively involved in decision-making and planning activities related to education as well as present concrete proposals and solutions to address problems identified at the school and in the community. The Student Parliament was a successful experience that allowed students to have a voice and vote in decision-making and actively contribute to the educational improvement of their locality and community, making visible the constant participation of this group.
